We are swiftly gaining ground and students are convinced with our ideology of India First: Dewan

In an interview to Jahanvi, Diwan, a research scholar in university’s language school, said he is an Indian first and a Muslim later.

What is your first reaction on being nominated for the post of vice-president from ABVP ?
I joined ABVP in 2011. I am thankful that the party gave me chance to contest for such an esteemed post. Our party believes in national integrity and talks about the nation as a whole.

JNUSU is a left’s bastion, what chances do you see for ABVP?
The membership of ABVP has increased from around 400 to 900 in a few months. We are swiftly gaining ground and students are convinced with our ideology of ‘India First’.

Do you think, BJP government at center has increased the chances of ABVP in JNU?
To some extent, we can say Modi effect has worked. Also, our party focuses on basic issues faced by students and not on international issues which is usually focussed upon by left wing associations.

How did students of your community react when you decided to join a party which is branded as right wing Hindu union?
The students of my community are very much in support of my decision. I believe there should be equal representatives in ABVP from minor community. I still consider myself as an Indian first and Muslim later.

Other students’ bodies have called your nomination a communal card of ABVP. Your reaction?
I don’t understand why the Left wing associations have created such a fuss about it. They have created such a scare amongst students towards our party. But we are working hard in the campus to convince the students about our party’s ideology.
