We are simply melodious: Shibani Kashyap

If you were wondering where Shibani Kashyap was these days, she is back in the city. This time, she is coming with her band Sojourne to perform. Best known for her song Sajna Aa Bhi ja, Kashyap plans to play a ‘heady mix’ of songs.

Kashyap is the lead vocalist and rhythm guitar player, Subash is the lead guitarist who is also on backing vocals, Vishal Lomjail is on keyboards, Tanu on bass, Joshua on drums and Neil Gomes is the instrumentalist. Millennium Post caught up with the bubbly singer on her and the band’s musical journey. Here are excerpts:

How different is the music of Sojourne?

I don’t want our music to be classified in any one genre. We are simply melodious. It’s basically a collision of pop, rock, jazz, classical and essentially Sufi — which I am very inspired from. We have not decided to be tagged as pop-rock or Sufi-rock. We have not even stuck to one language. We play both English and Hindi originals and covers. The country listens to English numbers but we never wanted to limit ourselves just to the pub crowd. So, we are not classified — we are a heady mix!

How did the idea of having your own band come into play?

Beside being a playback singer, I have always wanted to keep my musical individuality alive. The band was started two years back and we never looked back. All members have their own musical sensibilities and are illustrious musicians. It’s an extension of our personality.

What will the band be playing at the event?

We would be playing originals as well as covers. I’ll be singing a different version of Sajna Aa Bhi Ja which would be more garnished. We have a special Rajasthani folk singer with us who will be adding the Sufi effect. We’ll also be playing English singles. Few covers like Rolling in Deep by Adele and Mood Operator.

Your next Bollywood numbers?

There is Shobana7 Nights of Raveena Tandon where you will also see me in a music video with her. Also, there is Shootout at Wadala coming up with the likes of John Abraham in it.

Where is Soujourne heading?

We are performing live at many other places. We want our sound to be related to and would be launching an album soon.

Playback singer or a band member?

Playback singing has more perks professionally as it gives you more recognition and you are widely known and heard.

Playing for a band is self-satisfying as you can keep your own musical individuality alive which is quite important for an artiste. Both have equal importance for me.
