Water supply to VIP areas to be curtailed

Keeping in view the ongoing acute shortage of water across the city, Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Monday instructed the Delhi Jal Board [DJB] to curtail the supply to her residence at 3, Motilal Nehru Marg in Lutyen’s Bungalow Zone.

In order to ensure equitable distribution of drinking water to everyone, Dikshit ordered DJB and NDMC chairperson to reduce supply to Lutyen’s Bungalow Zone and other surrounding areas, so that everybody could get a reasonable quantity of drinking water everyday.

Last week, at the meeting held between the CM and DJB, it was decided to ration water by cutting the supply in areas where water was being supplied round-the -clock by five hours.

DJB officials said the water thus saved could be evenly distributed, especially to those colonies that have been facing acute shortage during the last six days.

Dikshit added that her government was sensitive to the needs of the citizens’ of Delhi and would do everything possible to arrange water for the city.

According to Dikshit, nobody would be allowed to take political mileage on this issue.

‘The people of Delhi are averse to theatrics by senior Opposition leaders,’ Dikshit said, referring to the city BJP leaders, who have been critical of the Delhi government for the water crisis.

The city government has taken up the issue of reduction in supply of raw water by Haryana with Prime Minister and Union Home Minister.

Meanwhile, the Centre will chalk out a plan of action, which will include deploying of engineers to check the veracity of claims and counter-claims.

Highly-placed sources said the engineers from the Central Water Commission [CWC] and the Upper Yamuna Board would be deputed at the sites from where Haryana releases water to Delhi.

Similarly, engineers would also be posted at sites in Delhi that receive water from the neighbouring states, as this would help tab the actual water quantity supplied and received.
