Villagers, police clash leaves 1 dead

Violence erupted in the Khora village area of east Delhi on Sunday after a two-wheeler rider, along with co-passenger, were critically injured during a police checking. The incident led to protesters coming out on the street, leading to the death of one person while two others were injured. One out of the injured persons received gun shot injuries on his shoulder.

Till late Sunday night, the clash between the locals and the police continued, as the entire Mayur Vihar Phase 3 area remained under heavy police presence. More than a dozen cops and about 15 locals were critically injured by the time last reports came in.

During the clash, a CNG pump, located in the Khora village, was torched by the mob. Besides, a police booth, three motorcycles, a Delhi Transport Corporation bus and a loaded mini-truck were set on fire. The crowd also destroyed the property of the Delhi Jal Board office that is situated in the same area.

The incident took place during a police checking exercise, when a policeman asked the rider of a Honda Aviator scooty to stop. But, he did not stop. He reportedly told the policeman that he was going to get his child medically treated in the hospital so he could not stop.

However, the policeman, in an attempt to stop him, hit the riders with a stick, which caused a fall. The pillion rider received head injuries. That reportedly enraged the local people and they started the protest, which flared up later.

The Delhi Police has detained 17 people.
