Veteran nationals draws huge response

Indian badminton’s veterans, many of them former national champions, aged between 35 and 70 will face off in the YES Bank 37th veteran national badminton championship to be held at Bombay Gymkhana from Feb ruary 19 to 24.

A record 1,045 entries have been received from Delhi, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Madhya Pradesh for the event which will feature big names like Leroy D’Sa, twice silent Olympics silver medalist Sandeep Dhillon and current world 60+ champion Hubert Miranda. D’Sa is a former Thomas Cupper, Asian Games bronze medallist and 15-time national doubles finalist. The championship, which is being co-hosted by Bombay Gymkhana and Cricket Club of India, will comprise 32 events including men’s singles and doubles, women’s singles and doubles, mixed doubles (35+, 40+, 50+, 55+, 60+, 65+, 70+). ‘This is not only India’s single largest badminton event, but  also the first professional-promoted national tournament on the lines of tournaments held in UK,’ said Shirish Nadkarni, head of badminton, Bombay Gymkhana,

While previous editions of the event had upto 600 entries, this year’s edition has broken all records with over 1000 entries. There will be 475 matches in the qualifying events. Crystal trophies will be awarded to the winners along with prize money of Rs 6,000 (singles winners) and Rs 4,000 (doubles winners).
