Vehicles pile up on Yamuna Expressway

In an early morning accident on Yamuna Expressway on Monday over 12 cars piled up due to heavy fog. According to the police, over two dozen were injured in the accident and two were seriously injured.

The first collision took place between two cars at around 7 am at 8 km from the ‘zero point’, where the Yamuna Expressway begins from the Greater Noida side, on the carriageway which leads to Delhi from Agra. ‘Two vehicles that were moving slowly rammed into each other. As they stalled in the centre of the road, other cars couldn’t notice them on time, and kept bumping into them. Several others had near misses or grazed the stationary cars,’ senior officers said.

While representatives of the Kailash hospital said that 11 persons checked into their hospital for minor injuries, two have relatively serious injuries have been admitted at Yatarth Hospital in Greater Noida. ‘While Yogesh Kumar, 31, suffered from head injuries, Ram Kanwar, 51, sustained head and back injuries. Both were admitted in the ICU but are stable at the moment,’ doctors said. Officials of Jaypee, the operators of the Expressway said signages have been put up all along the Expressway warning commuters to drive slowly. ‘The signs are being flashed on all electronic screens and drivers are advised to travel with caution. Jaypee vehicles took the injured to various hospitals and swung into action immediately. By 9 am, all the damaged vehicles were removed from the site of the accident,’ officials said.
