Upadhyaya takes over as UPCC chief

After a gap of eight months, Uttarakhand Pradesh Congress Committee (UPCC) has found a fresh face as new president following opposition from certain factions.  Former legislature and state Cabinet minister Kishore Upadhyaya took over the charge of new president of Uttarakhand Pradesh Congress Committee (UPCC) replacing former president Yashpal Arya in Rajeev Gandhi Bhavan on Sunday. Since former Congress leader Satpal Maharaj joined BJP in the third week of March, the party was desperately looking for a vibrant leader who can fill the vacuum created since then.
‘Former CM Vijay Bahuguna could attend the event as he is out on a foreign tour with his family members,’ senior Congress leader Jot Singh Bisht said.

CM Harish Rawat, who is undergoing treatment at AIIMS in New Delhi, sent his best wishes for the newly-appointed PCC chief and pinned hope that party will achieve new milestones under his leadership.

The announcement was made last Wednesday by senior Congress leader Janardhan Dwivedi in New Delhi, but some legislatures of Vijay Bahuguna’s camp met party high command, including national party president Sonia Gandhi, to convey their displeasure over this issue.

In Delhi, Upadhayaya assured senior Congress leaders that he will try his best to bring all party leaders under one umbrella to strengthen and rejuvenate the oldest party in Uttarakhand, which has not come out from the shocking defeat in recently held Lok Sabha elections.

Former CM Vijay Bahuguna’s close trustee and Narendra Nagar legislature Subodh Uniyal was the front-runner for the prestigious seat, since former president Yashpal Arya resigned in November 2013. But party command did not accept his resignation and asked Arya to continue in office till a suitable candidate was found to fill this seat.
