UP keeps a poll promise, gives unemployment allowance

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav distributed  the long awaited unemployment allowance to over 10,000 jobless youth in a function held here on Sunday with a promise that his government would also provide them jobs in future.

'My government will not limit itself to only giving allowance. We will also provide jobs in the future by making Uttar Pradesh one of the most developed states of India,' Yadav said in the function where his father and national president of Samajwadi Party Mulayam Singh Yadav was the chief guest.

Youths from seven districts namely Lucknow, Unnao,Hardoi, Sitapur,  Lakhimpur Kheri, Rae Bareli and Kanpur districts were given this allowance in the installment.

'This scheme was launched by my father in his last tenure. But BSP government scrapped this. My Government revived this project because we feel it is government’s responsibility to provide either employment or unemployment allowance,' Akhilesh said.

He said his government is trying to restore order in the state by implementing an industrial policy that would allow private entrepreneurs  set up units. We are also trying to improve power scenario. This in turn will help in generating employment, he said.  All unemployed youths between 25 years and 40 years and below BPL are entitled to this unemployment allowance. They will get Rs 1000 per month and  payments would be made quarterly.

Mulayam Singh said, 'All the poll promises would be fulfilled. After this scheme girls would get Kanya Vidyadhan and then Muslim girls who have passed class XII would get Rs 30,000.’

Labour Minister Waqar Ahmad said that to start with 10,256 youth were given cheques. This much-hyped scheme was marked with controversy when earlier government had decided to make the beneficiaries of unemployment Scheme project to work in different government projects as per their education. But later the government rescinded this decision.
