The district administration of Shamli has started to dismantle a part of Muzaffarnagar relief camps. Officials say the people were given notice in advance to move to their villages.
The land belonged to forest department and after the forest ranger filed an FIR, the administration had no option but to get it vacated. Officials claimed in last few weeks the number of residents increased. People from nearby villages have started residing there to get compensation meant for riot victims.
‘The government has paid Rs 5 lakh as compensation to the riot victims and had expected them to return to their villages. But a majority took the money and preferred to stay back. Many NGOs chipped and are providing blankets and food,’ he said.
