UP govt orders boundary walls around graveyards

The Uttar Pradesh Government has issued an order asking district magistrates to construct boundary walls around graveyards and cremation grounds of all minority communities with immediate effect.

The government order was issued by Chief Secretary Javed Usmani and the same was passed on to district magistrates early this week. The order says that all graveyards and cremation  grounds of minority communities including Muslims, Christians, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains and Parsis should be protected by constructing boundary walls around them.

The decision to construct boundary walls around cremation grounds and graveyards of minority communities was taken in a state cabinet meeting last week. The Government had earlier declared in the state assembly during the budget session that it would protect the graveyards/cremation grounds.

The order says that DM should constitute a 8-member committee comprising of police officials, CDO, ADM, City Magistrate and the District Minority Welfare Officer. 'Only public graveyards or cremation grounds approved by Tehsildars should be taken up under this scheme,' the order said.

In another decision a four member committee headed by Principal Secretary, Revenue K S Atoria has been constituted for removing the encroachment on ponds, water reservoirs, pastures and graveyards situated on Gram Sabha Land.

The commissioner and Secretary Board of Revenue will be the member coordinator of the committee. An officer not below the rank of Additional Legal Remembrancer and Special Secretary, nominated by principal Secretary, Law and Justice and Legal Remembrancer will be member of the committee. Besides this, an officer not below the rank of Inspector General of Police nominated by Director General of police, UP will also be member of the committee.
