Untimely rain in UP causes Rs 1,000-cr loss to crops

The UP government on Friday said according to preliminary reports, there has been a loss of Rs 1,000 crore to crops due to the recent untimely rains and hailstorms in the state.

Minister for Handicapped Welfare Ambika Chaudhary said the state has also written to the Centre, seeking immediate relief of Rs 500 crore. “We have also asked the Centre to send its committee for detailed assessment of the losses”, he said. The minister said all revenue realisation had been suspended and a plot-to-plot verification was being carried out to asses the quantum of losses.

To members’ contention that several farmers have either committed suicide or died of shock, Chaudhary said though it was not correct, yet the government was doing everything to provide help to the bereaved families. He said the bereaved families are being provided a relief of Rs 5 lakh each, which include the central share of Rs 1.5 lakh.
