Unity, discipline should be maintained: Sushma

The internal squabbling within the Bharatiya Janata Party(BJP) which had turned into a headache for the party, found a mention during the party's national council, with Leader of Opposition, Lok Sabha, Sushma Swaraj's thrust on the issue. The BJP leader was of the view that unity within the organisation is missing and this led to party's defeat in Himachal and Uttrakhand.

‘A new word in the political lexicon has been added, Niptana or politically eliminating your opponent within the party. We feel that we are eliminating just one person but we end up doing great harm to the party,’ said Swaraj. The BJP leader said that people who enter politics have all the right to have ambitions and dream of becoming an MP or MLA, but at times there are many good candidates from a single seat and the party is left with no option but to choose only one.

Swaraj said that if a party is able to win the elections, then the party workers who could not contest elections can be adjusted in some way or another. ‘Unity and constructiveness should be our motto,’ said Leader of Opposition, who also added that a party worker is not considered successful if he leaves the organisation, if denied ticket by the party.  Swaraj was of the view that constructiveness at the booth level is the key if a party wants to win elections.

BJP President Rajnath Singh issued gag orders and said that discipline within the party needs to be maintained. ‘ We have fallen into the habit of giving ‘bytes’ to news channels and at times party leaders have made some controversial statements which harm the image of the party, so from now on only authorised leaders should give statements,’ said Singh.
