Undertrial escapes from police custody

An alleged criminal, who was taken to Punjab for a court hearing, escaped from police custody while he was being brought back to the national capital, sources said on Wednesday. Raj Kandola allegedly escaped from Ludhiana from the custody of Delhi police who were returning after a court hearing. Police were taking him back to Delhi in Jammu Mail. He was arrested by Delhi police on 11 August from Dwarka Link Road near NH-8 based on a specific tip-off that he would be coming in a BMW car.

Kandola is wanted in Punjab a number of cases including for sending illegal immigrants to foreign countries and those relating to Arms Act. During his arrest, police recovered 411 grams of high quality heroin, 2.75 grams of a psychotropic substance and 250 grams of Ephedrine. Also, three semi-automatic sophisticated fire arms along with 15 live cartridges were also recovered.

Punjab Police had approached the Delhi Police for help in arresting Kandola after he escaped from police net following unearthing of a narcotics drug manufacturing unit in Jalandhar in June.
