Under-trial prisoner booked for murder flees hospital

Many have raised questions on the security arrangements at the hospital and also pointed fingers at the hospital authorities for not taking enough preventive measures. After his arrest, the court had observed that the accused was suffering from some problems and asked the police to ensure his treatment.

It was learnt that there were security personnel to look after him. On Friday morning, they found the accused was missing. They carried out a search in the toilet but failed to trace the accused.
After being informed, the police reached the spot and started an investigation. They started a raid in the nearby areas to nab the accused.

The incident had shaken the state as the accused had cut off his sister’s head with one stroke of a sword and walked to a local police station with the head in his hand. The incident took place at Ayubnagar area of Nadial. The local residents were terrified when they saw the accused was heading towards the police station with a sword in one hand and the head on the other.

After entering into the police station, Mehtab had put the sword and the head on a table and told a police that he was ready to be arrested for murdering his sister, 22-year-old Nilofar Bibi. He reportedly told the on duty officer to seize the head as evidence.

Police later recovered Nilofar’s headless body lying in a pool of blood. The accused told the police that he had killed his sister for running off with a lover by dishonouring the family and thus termed the incident as an ‘honour killing’.
