Under-trial killed by fellow prisoner

An under-trail prisoner was killed by another inmate in the prisoners’ cell in North Bengal Medical College and Hospital on Tuesday.  Police said the victim Upen Burman was arrested for his alleged involvement with Greater Cooch Behar People’s Association and the accused Nikhil Roy was involved in a murder case.

Both were admitted in the hospital. This morning Roy suddenly picked up the saline stand and started hitting Burman.  He had locked the door of the ward from outside. As a result policemen in the adjacent room couldn’t enter the prisoner’s cell. The police broke open the door and also informed their superiors. Finding the police entering the cell, Roy locked himself inside the toilet in the cell.

He had attacked the policemen when they tried to arrest him. Finally he was arrested after senior police officers reached the spot.

Doctors rushed for Burman’s treatment and found him lying dead on his bed in a pool of blood.
Charges of dereliction of duty were also brought against the on duty policemen.
