Uma raises questions over Rawat’s ‘wives’

BJP vice-president and election in-charge for Uttarakhand, Uma Bharati, sharpened her attack on Uttarakhand chief minister Harish Rawat and his wife Renuka for alleged violation of the model code of conduct and misuse of the chief minister’s office for personal gains and demanded his immediate resignation from the post on moral grounds.

Addressing a press conference on Monday, Bharati said: ‘Basanti Devi is the first wife of Harish Rawat. I have heard that she has a grown-up son from him. In that situation, how Harishji tied the nuptial knot again without divorcing his first wife. In Ranikhet, an unidentified person (named Sanjay Rawat) has claimed to Election Commission in form-7 (dated 8/4/14) that she had suddenly disappeared from her house. But her whereabouts are still a mystery.’

‘She is not an ordinary woman. But the wife of the CM of Uttarakhand. This land is also known as devbhoomi, where woman is worshipped and given equal status to man. What has happened to Basanti is injustice and I will stand by her in all conditions. We have requested the DGP to conduct an inquiry into this case, and if the police is unable to trace and produce her in public view within 48 hours, then be ready to face mass movement of women force on road,’ she warned.

Adding another charge on Renuka Rawat, a Congress candidate from Haridwar LS seat, the firebrand leader said, ‘On 20 March, 2014, Renuka filled the form-6 which is usually filled by new voter, where she applied for adding her name in the voters’ list of Dehradun. Further, on 8/4/14, she requested the Election Commission at Ranikhet legislative assembly in Almora district to delete her name from the voters list. It means from 20 March to 8 April of current year, her name was included in the voters list from two Lok Sabha constituencies, which is gross violation of EC norms.’
