U’khand chopper crash kills 3, more cloudburst

Two persons, including the pilot, were killed in a helicopter crash at Garurchatti in Uttarakhand’s Rudraprayag district on Wednesday, the police said. Besides the pilot, a technician on board the chopper was killed, Rudraprayag SP Barindarjit Singh said.

The accident occurred when the helicopter, belonging to a private company, was taking off from Garurchatti for Kedarnath area, officials said. An IAF Mi-17 V5 chopper on a rescue mission had crashed near Guptkashi in flood-ravaged Uttarakhand on 25 June, killing all 20 on board.
A private chopper, with relief material, had met a similar fate on 21 June in Gaurikund area, leaving the pilot injured.

A cloudburst was reported at 6:30 am in the Karnaprayag block, en route to Badrinath from Rudraprayag. The resultant heavy rain in the higher hills has changed the course of the rivulet in the Sunali village. Some schools buildings, farming land and houses have been damaged due to incessant downpours. Two persons have reportedly died and one 18-year-old girl is missing in the Karnaprayag block.

The senior officials of district administration have visited the disaster-hit villages assuring continuance of supplies. Ten tents, seventy food kits comprising rice, pulses and other necessary items along with 80 blankets have been issued by the district administration.

Meanwhile, in Rudraprayag, the Mandakini and Alaknanda rivers are overflowing due to nonstop rains in the higher hills. However, reports suggest all the inhabitants residing in danger-prone areas have been evacuated to safer places. There is a high alert vigil on the banks and bridges to meet any challenge from the nature’s fury.
