UGC ready to remove workload clause but not other demands

The University Grants Commission (UGC) is ready to remove the workload-related clause from its notification but is not willing to address other demands of the teachers.

According to sources, in a meeting with the teachers’ delegation, the UGC officials expressed that that the commission is agreed to resolve the workload-related demand. However, in a meeting held on Wednesday, the UGC officials denied to resolve any other demands of the agitating teachers which was strongly opposed by the teachers’ delegation. “As college and varsity teachers’ bodies’ protests continued unabated over the issue of revised Academic Performance Index (API) scores, the UGC had to accommodate several of their demands including not to increase workload,” sources said.

As per the sources, internal review and external consultations have led the commission to consider possible revisions including restoring the direct-teaching hours of assistant professors, associate professors and professors to 16, 14 and 14 hours respectively. “It is also likely that capping of API scores will be removed,” said the source.
