Two thrashed for protesting against gambling

A couple was beaten up for protesting against gambling in their neighbourhood. The couple lodged an FIR against the offenders of the local club who were involved in the gambling. Police arrested two persons in connection with the case.

Satya Rajak and his wife Prabha Rajak were attacked on Tuesday night when they protested against the gambling in a local club at Farakka.

Some members of the club forced the couple inside the club room and beat them black and blue. Rajak and his wife were released after they had been brought down to their knees.

They went to the police station for protection.

A police team then, went to the spot. Most of the club members had left the premises by then. Two of the members – Gautam Mondal and Bikas Mondal were caught by the police while they were trying to decamp from there.

It should be recalled that four persons were shot at and one was roughed up when they protested against gambling in their neighbourhood at Matikunda, Islampore in North Dinajpur, just a week ago. In that incident, a gang ran a gambling den in the Matikunda market area and lured impoverished villagers to play cards and dice games for money.

Residents of the area had reportedly been protesting against the practice where the poor villagers squandered their hard-earned money and also created ruckus-but to no avail. However in the Farakka incident, the couple was not only beaten up but were also threatened with dire consequences.

“I believe those two men, who were arrested by the police were just innocent club members who were not present during the assault. The culprits had gone at large,” said Satya Rajak.
