Two super speciality hospitals ready

After three years’ wait, two more super speciality hospitals are ready to serve the denizens of the city.

At a cabinet meeting held on Tuesday, the government decided to fully operationalise Janakpuri and Rajiv Gandhi super speciality hospitals. The hospitals are likely to be commissioned soon with the government deciding to hand over their management to a society comprising Central and city government officials.

These two hospitals were completed way back in 2009 and government had planned to run them under Public Private Partnership [PPP] model. The scheme, however, failed and the hospitals didn’t start functioning.

The Delhi government even thought of handing over these hospitals to Union Health Ministry.
But now it has been decided to get them registered under two different societies as it is extremely difficult to get highly qualified and specialist doctors in normal government set-up and processes.

Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit said, ‘The society will be headed by Chief Secretary of Delhi and it will comprise top officials of Union Health Ministry. We have decided to run the two hospitals under society mode as it will help the commoners.’

Sources said the decision will help in adding around 1,000 beds in city government’s hospitals. The private super speciality hospital charge very high for treatment, which the common man cannot afford. Establishment of two new speciality hospitals will be a a boon for weaker sections of the city residents.

The hospital at Janakpuri has been constructed over an area of 8.82 acre, at a total cost of Rs 72 crore. At present, the hospital has six storeys.

On the other hand, Rajiv Gandhi Super Speciality Hospital at Tahirpur has been constructed over an area of 13 acres, at a cost of Rs 88 crore. The hospital has a capacity of 650 beds in its eight floors.

At present, Delhi government has 38 major hospitals and four super speciality hospitals, including Institute of Human Behaviour and Allied Sciences [IHBAS], Delhi State Cancer Institute [DSCI], Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences [ILBS] and Maulana Azad Institute of Dental Sciences [MAIDS].
