Two police personnel injured in scuffle at Suri correctional home

Tension ran high at the Suri correctional home after a clash broke out between the police
personnel and some inmates which left two policemen injured on Wednesday.

The incident occurred when the police opposed some male inmates interacting with some female inmates. This infuriated the male inmates and they retaliated by attacking the policemen.

Subhajit Mukherjee, a welfare official, and Sudhir Biswas, a police constable were injured when the inmates pounced on them. Police said that on Wednesday morning they found that some male inmates were talking to some women inmates inside the correctional home. The security personnel rushed the spot and asked the men to return to their cells. The accused got agitated and began arguing with the policemen.

The situation turned ugly when they attacked the security personnel, and eventually a scuffle broke out between the inmates and the security personnel.

As the inmates were more in number, they overpowered the security personnel and beat them up. Other staff members soon rushed to the spot and rescued the two persons. The two men were immediately rushed to Suri hospital. They were later released after primary treatment. They received injuries on their hands.

The correctional authorities said that the security personnel only told the accused to talk to the concerned authorities and take permission to talk to the women inmates, but they refused to listen to the suggestions. They started beating up the security personnel, despite no provocation. A probe has been initiated in this regard.
