Two killed in state for protesting against antisocial activities

In two separate incidents two men, including a police personnel, were killed by miscreants when they protested against the antisocial activities in the locality. The incidents triggered tension in Howrah’s Panchla and Balurghat in South Dinajpur.

In the first incident, a man was stabbed to death after he protested against some drunkards creating nuisance in the area. Police said that the victim Israel Khan, a resident of Panchla, protested against some local youth who were shouting near his residence around 11 pm on Saturday night. Khan, an embroidery worker, came out of his house and requested them not to shout as his children were
asleep inside.

One of the accused, identified as Sheikh Rafiq, who happens to be his neighbour, abused him following which a quarrel broke out between the two. Rafiq suddenly took out a knife from his pocket and stabbed him.

Khan was declared brought dead after being taken to a hospital. Police later reached the spot and
arrested the accused.

In another incident, a cop – who protested against dumping of garbage in front of his residence – died after he was badly beaten up by his neighbours at Balurghat in South Dinajpur.

Police said that the victim, Bhabesh Das (57), a home guard, had protested against dumping of garbage near his residence by his neighbours on Saturday night. As a result, a quarrel broke out between him and his neighbour Prankishore Das and his two sons Raja and Paran.

In a heated altercation, the three allegedly beat up Das, who fell to the ground after being pushed. He was rushed to Balurghat Zilla hospital where he was declared brought dead by the doctors. Das was posted in the traffic department of the district police.

The district police arrested Prankishore and his two sons on the basis of a complaint lodged by Das’ family. The three accused were remanded in 14 days judicial custody after being produced before a Balurghat court on Sunday.
