Two killed in road accident, locals block state highway

Residents of Lotasi village under Chanchol police station in Malda put up road block on a state highway connecting Tulsihata with Bhaluka after two persons were killed in a road accident.

Akbar Ali (31) and his father-in-law Azgar Ali (47) were killed when the motorcycle they were travelling on was hit by a speeding truck coming from the opposite direction. Police said that Akbar was taking his father-in-law to Katihar in Bihar for treatment. They were going to Bhaluka station to catch Katihar bound Haate Bazare Express when the accident took place. When they reached Lotasi More area, a loaded truck lost its control and hit the motorcycle carrying the two victims, who were the residents of Islampur.

The local residents put up road block at the place of the accident and alleged that the vehicles run at a high speed, as a result of which accidents often take place in the area. Despite repeated pleas to the local police administration to take action against the vehicles that flout traffic norms, no action was taken, alleged the local people.

The driver of the speeding vehicle had failed to control the vehicle after taking a sharp turn and hit the two-wheeler. Local people took them to hospital where both were declared brought dead.

The road block had led to massive traffic congestion in the area. A huge contingent of police rushed to the spot and tried to bring the situation under control. The road block was withdrawn few hours later after senior police officers intervened and assured that necessary steps would be taken to check such accidents.
