Two killed in road accident

Two persons were killed in a road accident on Tuesday night in which a motorbike of collided head-on with a Tata Sumo on National Highway 31. Police said that the victims – Krishna Ghosh (18) and Biraj Gope (21) – were residents of Singimari in Mainaguri. The accident took place when they were heading towards Malbazar to visit a friend’s residence. Police came to know from a person, who had witnessed the incident that the Tata Sumo was at top speed.

The driver of the speeding vehicle had failed to control the vehicle after taking a  sharp turn and hit the two-wheeler. Local people took them to hospital where both were declared brought dead. Local people staged a demonstration and put up a road block protesting against the accident. Some local youth who were standing beside the road had seen the driver trying to flee with the car and started chasing him.

They caught the offending vehicle after a chasing it for around 10 minutes at a distance of a one and a half kilometre from the spot where the accident took place. Later the driver was handed over to the police and the vehicle was seized. The road block by the local people had led to massive traffic congestion in the area.

The road block was withdrawn after senior police officers intervened and assured that necessary steps would be taken to check such accidents on the stretch of the road. Police pickets have been posted to avoid further deterioration of law and order situation in the area.
