Two killed, four injured in road mishap in Nadia

Two persons, including the brother of the inspector-in-charge (IC) of Sarenga police station, were killed and five others injured in two separate road accidents in Nadia and Kolkata on Wednesday.

Police said that family members of Arunava Das, IC of Sarenga police station in Bankura, met with an accident on NH-34 at Chakdah in Nadia when they were returning from Behrampore Wednesday afternoon.

A truck from the opposite direction hit the car in which Das’ family was travelling, sending it into a water body beside the road.

Local people began efforts to rescue the victims. Police soon reached the spot and managed to rescue all the car occupants.

The car’s driver was declared brought dead when taken to Chakdah Hospital, while Arunava’s wife and brother Anjanava were admitted with severe injuries.

Anjanava later succumbed to his injuries, while Arunava’s wife was shifted to a city hospital as her condition deteriorated. Three others who were injured were initially admitted to Chakdah Hospital, but later shifted to Kalyani JNM Hospital.

The driver of the offending truck managed to flee and the police have seized his truck.

In another accident, a traffic sergeant was injured when a loaded truck hit him when he tried to stop it for violating traffic norms at Esplanade crossing early Wednesday morning.

The truck driver was in an inebriated state and did not stop at a red light. On seeing him breaking the traffic signal, the traffic sergeant signalled the driver to stop his truck.

Instead of stopping the vehicle, the driver hit the sergeant and attempted to flee with the vehicle.

Other on-duty traffic sergeants chased the truck, intercepted it near Chandni Chowk metro station and caught the driver. The truck has been seized. The injured traffic sergeant had a narrow escape and was sent to hospital for necessary treatment.
