Two held from city for gang-raping girl at Jagatdal

Two youth were arrested on Sunday from Jagatdal in connection with an incident in which a Class X student was allegedly gang-raped by the duo with whom she had come in touch through a social networking site.

A police officer said that the victim is a resident of Bidhannagar. She came in touch with one Virat Thakur, who is a resident of Jagatdal in North 24 Parganas, around six months ago through a social networking site.

Virat had befriended her and they had engaged in an affair. They had even started speaking over phone. They also used to meet quite often in Bidhannagar.

On November 30, Virat had asked her to meet him at Bidhannagar Road Station. The girl had left the house saying that she was going for private tuition. But she went to meet Virat.

Police said that the girl refused to go to him. But he had somehow convinced her to go with him saying that he would take her to his house. They took a train from Bidhannagar Road station and went to Jagatdal station. From there, they took an auto-rickshaw to reach the residential quarter of a jute mill, where his friend Shivam Pandey stays.

She was given some food and soft drinks. Police suspect that the food was spiked and she fell unconscious after having it. Virat and Shivam had then allegedly raped her when she fell unconscious. She had managed to return to her house the next morning. They had even snatched the cell phone of the girl.

The girl was traumatised when she returned home. Initially, she couldn’t disclose the incident to her family members. Later, she burst into tears and narrated the entire incident. She had lodged a complaint with Bidhannagar East police station.

The police had been in search of the accused and even conducted raids in their houses but they had managed to flee. Finally, the police received a tip off on Saturday late night that they had come to
their houses to meet their parents. The police went to their houses and arrested the duo.

The police also recovered the mobile phone of the victim from them.
