Two held from Baguiati, Dum Dum for making fake passports
Two persons were arrested from Baguiati and Dum Dum on Thursday afternoon on charges of making fake passports. However, the police are not ruling out the possibility of the duo’s connection with the terrorists as fake passports with address of different places including Pathankot, Jalandhar and Gurudaspur were recovered from them.
Sources said acting on a tip-off, police conducted raids and arrested Chittaranjan Rana alias Mama and Surojit Dutta. Rana is a resident of Dum Dum and Dutta is from Hanapara in Kestopur.
A huge number of fake passports were recovered from the duo. After inspecting all the passports, police found that some of those were having address of places including Pathankot, Jalandhar and Gurudaspur. Now, the officers were trying to find out whether the duo had connection with the racket that helps terrorists to get fake passports.
Preliminary investigation revealed that the duo used to prepare the fake passports in the city itself and there were some more youths, who were involved in the racket, from the city and its outskirts.
The police had arrested a woman from Chinar Park area on December 30 and many fake passports were recovered from her possession. Five more people were later arrested by the police for their involvement in the fake passport racket. Police came to know about those people after interrogating the woman.
Sources said the police came to know about the duo, who was arrested on Thursday, after question two of the five accused.
The police had been trying to arrest Rana and Dutta for the past few days. Raids were conducted at some places, but the police failed to find him. On Thursday, the accused were finally arrested.
The police said they have interrogated the accused till late night. They wanted to know how they have got hold of so many fake passports and for how long they had been running this racket. Sources said there were two main persons in the city who were running the racket. Rana is a person who was close to one of them. Police feel that they can arrest the kingpins after interrogating the duo.
Senior police officers held a high level meeting on Thursday evening where it was learnt that the officers from different intelligence agencies too contacted the Bidhannagar Police.
If needed, senior police officers of other states will also be contacted to get more information about the racket.
