Two held for selling illegal crackers

Two persons were arrested on the charge of selling illegal firecrackers on Friday morning.

The police also seized illegal fire crackers worth Rs 1 lakh.

One of the youth, Somnath Mondal, resident of

Naridana village was booked. He was taken to Baruipur police station.

The South 24 Parganas police raided few places on Thursday night and seized firecrackers which were illegal for buying and selling.

“Those fire crackers will have sounds more than 90 decibel from five metre at the point of bursting. They were seized,” said the officer.

“Mondal was owner of a small factory where the

illegal firecrackers had been made. Mondal sold those fire crackers in Champahati wholesale market. But most of those fire crackers had failed to pass the required limit of sound barrier,” said the officer.

However, the cops have chalked out the detailed plan of action in areas where illegal firecrackers are being made.

The Kolkata police, all the Commissionerate and distract police have taken adequate measures to stop the bursting of illegal firecrackers with the help of West Bengal Pollution Control Board.

Meanwhile, state environment minister Sovan Chatterjee on Thursday clearly stated that sound crackers above 90 decibel will not be allowed in Kali Puja and Diwali.

He said, unlike in the past, stern action would be taken against the manufacturers and sellers of the
fire crackers.

The state administration is, however, gearing up to convey the message among the people that Kali Puja is not the festival of sound crackers, but rather, the festival of light.
