Two held for beating up TMC leader in Durgapur

A Trinamool Congress leader was beaten up at Durgapur when he was returning home on Thursday night. Police arrested two persons in this connection. Police said that the victim Sujit Mukherjee is the party’s president of Faridpur block. He was admitted in a local hospital with severe injuries on his head.

Preliminary investigation revealed that there was a  trouble in the village on Thursday afternoon after the supervisor of 100 days work in the area was changed.

Some of the local people had protested against the step of changing the supervisor, while another group claimed that transfer of the supervisor was the right step. As a result, a scuffle broke out between the two groups and they put up a road block on Pratappur – Jampara Road.

The incident also caused a massive traffic congestion in the area and police went to the spot to bring the situation under control.

Being the party’s president of the area, Mukherjee also went to the spot and requested everyone to withdraw their roadblock.

Mukherjee, finally, managed to make the people understand and the roadblock was withdrawn.
But some unidentified  miscreants had attacked him from behind when he was returning home late Thursday night and hit him on his head with a wooden log. He fell on the road.

Some local people rushed to the spot and took him to hospital.

After speaking to the Trinamool Congress leader, police had identified the accused and picked them up from their residences on Friday morning.

Police claimed that the preliminary investigation revealed that the Trinamool Congress leader was attacked out of sheer rivalry as he had motivated many villagers to withdraw the roadblock.

A police officer said that some more people would get arrested in this connection and they have conducted searches at different places in this connection.
