Two get 3-yr RI for running illegal telephone exchange

A Designated Court at Ahmedabad (Gujarat) has convicted two persons with three years rigorous imprisonment in connection with illegal telephone exchange, which was detected in the year 2002. Those who were convicted are Sarad Varia and Pratik Mehta. Apart from punishing them with rigorous imprisonment, they were also asked to pay fine of Rs 70,000 and Rs 80,000 respectively.

“The illegal telephone exchange was detected in the year 2002 with large number of mobile Phone Sim Card numbers installed and connected with routers for routing the international calls to India by circumventing the official ILD (International Long Distance) call gateways,” CBI statement reads.

“The investigation revealed that the mobile numbers were registered in the name of non-existent company M/s Gagan Green Forest Pvt. Ltd. For running this set-up, the accused person had tie up with the operators located in USA and Canada. At the time of detection, Varia was the owner of an ISP company in the name of Blazenet Ltd. in Ahmedabad. After investigation, CBI filed a chargesheet. The Trial Court found the accused guilty and convicted them,” it read.
