Two separate incidents of fire have taken place in the state including the one that occurred at the operation theatre (OT) of the gynaecological department of Katwa Sub-divisional Hospital triggering panic among the patients and relatives.
A fire broke out inside the OT on Saturday morning when there were four patients. The incident spread tension inside the hospital campus with people running away to a safer place.
It was learnt that a surgery was being conducted when the fire broke out. Sensing the impending danger, the doctors and nurses took the patients out of the OT.
Local people and hospital staff members tried to douse the flame before some fire tenders had reached the spot.
According to the preliminary investigation, fire department officials suspect that the fire was caused due to an electrical short circuit in the air conditioning machine inside the room.
The fire department is yet to ascertain the actual cause of the fire. Three patients were transferred to Burdwan Medical College and Hospital as the hospital authorities decided to shut down the room for next couple of days.
The hospital staff members managed to douse the flame by the fire extinguisher.
Local people said that when the doctors were going to operate on a patient there was a thud in the room and the entire room was filled with thick smoke. The staff members somehow managed the take out the patients. A senior official of the hospital said that it has been suspected that an electrical short circuit might have led to the fire.
In a separate incident, a fire broke out at a multi-storeyed building in Bowbazar. The building houses
various offices. The local people spotted smoke billowing out of the building and informed the fire brigade.
Tension was triggered among the local residents as the area is densely populated. Police and fire brigade reached the spot and became involved in the rescue operations. Around five fire tenders were pressed into action to douse the flame.
Local people said that the fire was soon spreading to other floors. The fire fighters evacuated the building and brought the situation under control after couple of hours.
Preliminary investigation reveals that an electrical short circuit has caused the fire. The fire brigade is yet to find out the exact reason behind the fire and the extent of the damage.
