Two ‘fake’ CBI officials arrested

Two men were arrested here for allegedly cheating people by posing as CBI and Sales Tax officials, police said on Wednesday.

Kishan Lal (62) and Rajender Kumar (40), whom police had declared as bad characters, were apprehended from near Rohini West Metro station yesterday on a tip-off, DCP (Crime) Sanjay Kumar Singh said.

Lal is allegedly involved in 24 cases while Rajender is involved in nine cases.

‘They used to posed as CBI or Sales Tax Officers to cheat traders. We got a tip-off about them coming to Rohini. With this arrests, we have solved three cases,’ Singh said.

They were allegedly involved in cheating, Manzoor Ahmad Dar, a Jammu and Kashmir-based trader,  near Shish Ganj Gurudwara in Chandni Chowk on 9 May. Their associate Ramesh Kumar, who was allegedly involved in 29 cheating cases, was arrested that day itself.

‘Lal and Kumar, along with Ramesh, while posing as CBI officers, had allegedly stopped the trader and asked him to get his luggage searched. They then took him to Meena Bazar in an auto and took out Rs 25,000 from his pocket.

‘After checking the notes, they handed him a yellow envelope and told him that his notes are original. Dar checked the envelope and found a bunch of newspaper cuttings in the size of currency notes. He then started shouting for help but the trio fled,’ a senior police official said.

In February this year, the trio had allegedly cheated a resident of Banda in UP in the same way, while in March last year, they cheated a person near Novelty Cinema Hall while posing as sales tax officers.

Lal's father runs a dairy in Amritsar while his son runs a transport business. He left his house about 30 years ago and came to Delhi. He started working in private firms but was unable to keep his job.
