Two DYFI leaders held for creating trouble at Burdwan University

Police have arrested two DYFI leaders in connection with the incident that took place at Burdwan University on February 23.

It may be recalled that a section of SFI supporters ransacked valuables including furniture at the university. The police had resorted to lathicharge as the situation went out of control.

Police arrested Seikh Nasim Ahmed, zonal secretary of DYFI and Sk Firoz, a zonal member of the party. Around 1.30 am police went to their houses and arrested them.

It is learnt that the duo were present on the spot when the students had ransacked the valuables of the university. The police claimed that they were arrested as they had allegedly instigated the students and it led to a trouble inside the university campus.

Supporters of DYFI and CPI(M) on Thursday gheraoed Burdwan police station protesting against the arrest. They shouted slogans against the police for resorting to lathicharge on the SFI supporters. The gherao was withdrawn after a representative of the party submitted a memorandum to the police. Demanding that the DYFI leaders were not present in the varsity when the incident took place, senior leaders of the party claimed that the police arrested them after being instructed by leaders of the rulling party.

Brushing aside the allegations, a senior police officer said: “There are many DYFI leaders here. We could have arrested anyone if there would have been any political reasons behind it. The duo were arrested as investigated had revealed that they were present at the spot and involved with the incident.”
