Two doctors including BJP candidate held for child trafficking

In another major breakthrough in connection with newborn children trafficking incident, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) on Wednesday arrested two MBBS doctors including the BJP candidate from ward number 31 in Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation election 2015.

Dr Dilip Ghosh, who was BJP’s candidate and Dr Nityananda Biswas were remanded in custody of CID for nine days after being produced before the Basirhat Court on Wednesday afternoon.

The arrest of the BJP leader from Bidhannagar came on the day when BJP supporters headed by Locket Chatterjee organised a protest rally against the incidents of child trafficking in the state.

State BJP president Dilip Ghosh said the doctor has been suspended from all his posts.

“Let him come out clean to be a part of the party once again,” he said.

With the arrest of the two more doctors, the total arrest in connection with the child trafficking racket went up to 20.

Apart from Dr Ghosh and Dr Biswas, earlier Dr Santosh Samanta was arrested for being involved with the child trafficking racket. Out of rest there are some quacks.

CID came to know about Dr Ghosh after interrogating the arrested people. Investigating officers came to know that Dr Ghosh was involved with the functioning of South View Nursing Home at Behala that was being run by one Putul Banerjee alias Bordi, who was also arrested earlier.

Investigation also revealed that he was also attached with Shree Krishna Nursing Home for 21 years. Shree Kirshna Nursing Home at College Street and South View Nursing Home in Behala were the two nursing homes which were found working hand-in-gloves with NGOs Sujit Smriti Memorial Trust at Maslandapur and the old age home at Thakurpukur to sell newborn babies.

Dr Ghosh was earlier a Left Front leader. He had contested in the municipal election as a Forward Bloc member from ward number 10 against Sabyasachi Dutta in 2000. He became a CPI(M) Councillor in 2005 by defeating Anita Mondal of Trinamool Congress. He had again contested in the election in 2010 when he was defeated by Trinamool Congress candidate Anita Mondal. He had also contested in the election as a BJP candidate in 2015 against Sabyasachi Dutta.

Dr Ghosh was taken to Bhawani Bhavan and interrogated for a long time. Though he was allowed to go home on Tuesday evening, he was once again summoned for interrogation on Wednesday morning. He was arrested after discrepancies were found in his statements.

Sources said that Ashish Sarkar and his wife Kanan Sarkar from Behala came to the CID’s office. They told the investigating officers that a quack, Tapan Biswas, who is in CID custody, had sent them to Dr Nityananda Biswas in Behala saying that their baby was having a pore on the heart.
Their one-day old baby was admitted to the nursing home in Behala under Dr Biswas. The doctor had allegedly claimed after a few hours that the baby had died.

However, instead of their one-day old baby, they got back the body of a three to four day old baby. Dr Biswas was arrested from his Behala residence on Wednesday morning.
