Two cops hurt after scuffle breaks out with local residents

Two policemen were injured after a scuffle broke out between the local residents and the police, at Gopalnagar area in Bongaon on Monday. The incident took place when police went to the area to arrest a man who had allegedly killed his wife. 

The local residents staged demonstration in front of police demanding that the accused must be handed over to them.

When the police personnel tried to convince the local people, they started pelting stones and damaged a police vehicle. 

A huge contingent of police was later deployed to bring the situation under control. The police team later arrested the man. 

Police have also detained four people for creating trouble in the area. An officer said the accused Sandip Sarkar slashed his wife’s throat with a sharp weapon. 

Local residents rushed to the house at Choubedia area when they heard Laxmi Sarkar screaming. 

They immediately took Laxmi to a nearby hospital where the doctors declared her brought dead.   The local residents said the couple used to engage in a quarrel quite often over some family matters. But on Monday the incident turned worst when Sandip beat up Laxmi and attacked her with a sharp weapon. 

Her body has been sent for post- mortem. Police were interrogating the accused and started an inquiry into the incident.
