Two beaten up for protesting against sleaze racket in Malda

Two youth were beaten up when they protested against illegal activities including running of a sleaze racket by a local resident in his house at RSP Lane in Malda.

Police said the victims – Balaram Halder and his brother Aviram – were the two youth from the locality who raised voices against the illegal activities. Despite being well aware of the illegal activities taking place in the area, no one had done anything about it.

On Saturday, the Halder brothers found some youth from another locality entering the house of one Bijay Lala where the accused used to run a sleaze racket.

They went inside the house and started protesting against the illegal activities. It led to a scuffle. The youth in the house had tried to send the brothers outside the building. A scuffle broke out when the duo threatened to inform the police. They were beaten up till they fell on the ground.

Local people went inside building and rescued the duo. Policemen from English Bazar police station went to the spot and took both of them to Malda Medical College and Hospital where they were admitted with injuries.

Balaram received injuries on his face and his brother Aviram received severe injuries on his head. Police detained three persons including two women in this connection.

Local people submitted a mass petition to the police demanding arrest of the accused and to take necessary steps to check such activities in the area.

Local people informed the police that quite often unknown people from different places visit the house of Bijay Lala.

The youth passed lewd comments at the women and girls who are residents of the area. Though the local people had never lodged any complaint with the police in this regard, they had informed them verbally. The police assured that they will be taking necessary steps to avoid repetition of such incidents in the area.
