Two arrested in connection with Cooch Behar harassment case

Police arrested the conductor and helper of the bus on charges of attempting to sexually harass a woman bank employee in a moving bus in Cooch Behar. The duo was arrested on Monday morning.

Police said that the accused driver Hafizur Rahaman and the helper Mrinal Chandra Sarkar were arrested from their residence on Monday morning. They were remanded in the custody of police after being produced before the court on Monday afternoon.

The woman had taken a bus in which there was no passenger to reach home on Friday evening. She was about to go to Dinhata. The conductor told her that the bus was going to Dinhata when she had asked him whether they were taking any passenger in the bus.

The incident brought back the memories of Nirbhaya in Delhi.

There was no one in the bus apart from the driver, conductor and two other men. They started closing the door and windows of the bus when it reached a deserted place. Realising that the situation was turning worse, she asked to stop the bus. But the driver didn’t pay heed to her request. Thus, she somehow managed to jump off the running bus to save herself. She received severe injuries on both of her legs and was admitted to hospital.

Her brother had lodged a complaint with the police in this connection on Saturday night and the police arrested the driver and the conductor on Monday morning. The search for the other two accused is going on.
