Two arrested for battering youth to death in Howrah

The accused have been identified as Atish Hela and Rahul Hari who are the residents of Howrah. Police said that they have got enough evidence against the accused.

 After interrogating the two accused, police have found some irregularities in their statement which had aroused suspicion among the investigating officers. They were later arrested in this connection after the investigating officers became convinced that the duo was involved in the crime.

According to the preliminary investigation, police suspect that a quarrel had broken out between them and the victim which further led to the murder of the youth whose face was disfigured as it was smashed with a heavy chunk of concrete which was lying beside the body inside the Bijoyananda Park, Howrah.

The accused were remanded in police custody after being produced before a court in Howrah. The police are trying to ascertain if there was involvement of some other persons. Police came to know in the interrogation that the accused had an old rivalry with the victim.

 Local people suspected them after they saw the two accused strolling aimlessly outside the park on late Wednesday evening. The local residents had informed the police that two youth were roaming in the area. The police reached the spot and arrested them following an interrogation.

It is not, however, clear to the police that why the two accused went to the place of the incident in the evening after committing the crime in the morning and are yet to investigate into the matter.

The accused have confessed their crime in the interrogation. Police said that the victim whose identity is yet to be ascertained had asked Atish to bring him some water but the latter had pounced on him saying that how a vagabond can ask him to fetch water. 

A quarrel had broken out following which the accused had beaten up the victim. When he tried to resist, the two accused brought a concrete chunk and hit him on his face. Senior police officers also took the accused to the spot of the incident and reconstructed the incident.

The body of the youth was recovered from inside Bijoyananda Park with his face disfigured. The victim was crushed to death which reminded of the stone man incidents that had created much furore in the state in late 80’s. Local people who take stroll at the Bijoyananda Park, Narsingha Dutta road had found that the body lying inside the park with his face smashed.
