Twenty injured in Siliguri school bus accident

A school bus met an accident at Debidanga, Siliguri on Tuesday morning. Fifteen students and five teachers were injured and were rushed to the Siliguri District Hospital. This incident is a grim reminder of the accident that had taken place in New Town on Monday where 18 students were injured after a school bus got overturned.

Police said the bus, which was coming from Lincoln High School lost its control near a petrol pump at Debidanga. The bus got side turned and most of the students were hit by the iron rod inside the bus.

Police said that some students managed to come out of the vehicle and joined hands with the locals to rescue their classmates and teachers. The police came to the spot and expedited the rescue work.

“The students were admitted to the hospital. The injuries of few students were critical. Some of them have head and waist injuries. Two teachers were also critically injured,” a police officer said.
However, the accused driver was arrested and taken to the police station for interrogation.

“We are trying to find out that whether he has any license to drive school buses. It is also being investigated whether he was drunk or not,” the officer said.

A similar incident had happened in New Town on Monday where a bus was carrying students to a school at around 7.30 am. The local residents told the police the accident took place when the bus was taking a turn at Akanksha More.

A loaded truck lost its control and hit the bus. As the bus was taking a turn, it too lost its balance and overturned.

Eye witnesses said that the truck was coming at a high speed but when the truck driver suddenly saw the bus, he applied brakes but could not control the vehicle. As a result, the truck hit the bus.
