Tusker fight leads to one death

A fierce fight between the two full grown tuskers eventually led to the death of one in a forest adjoining areas of Tangashol village under Goaltore police station in West Midnapore.

The incident triggered tension in the village. The local people said that they heard the trumpet of the elephants and people became scared. They were keeping their fingers crossed praying that the elephants do not enter the locality.

Many of the villagers spent sleepless night on Monday in fear of being attacked by the elephants.
On early Tuesday morning, the local people gathered enough courage and stepped out of their houses and reached the spot. They found that one tusker was lying dead on the ground.

They also found that many trees nearby. But the villagers did not find any trace of the other elephant which might have received injuries during the fight. After being informed, the senior forest department officials from Goaltore range rushed to the spot and recovered the dead body 
of the tusker. They have sent it for the post-mortem examinations.

The local people have said that in last few days, some elephants were carrying out destructive activities in the adjoining areas of the forest.

The elephants had caused much damage to some of the villages adjoining forests. The local residents alleged that the forest department failed to take adequate steps to check the elephants from entering the villages and carrying out destruction.

Forest department officials are trying to trace the injured elephant to examine its health condition.
