Truck claims life of couple on bike

Tension ran high at English Bazar area of Malda following a road accident on Sunday afternoon. The accident led to a huge traffic jam in the area.

A couple who was riding on a motorcycle along the National Highway 34 died after being hit by a speeding truck in front of Rabindra Bhavan under the English Bazar police station. An irate mob ransacked the vehicle and beat up the truck driver. The local residents clashed with the police when the latter reached the spot. The police resorted to the lathi charge to control the situation.

Some of the local residents were injured in the incident. The local people staged demonstration at the spot protesting against the reckless driving of the vehicles along the National Highway.

Police said that the Yusuf Ali and his wife, residents of Vaishnab Nagar area in Malda were returning home on a motor cycle after doing some shopping. When Yusuf was riding the motorcycle with his wife on the pillion, a speeding truck lost control and hit the motorcycle. The bikers received critical injuries. They were declared brought dead after being taken to Malda Medical College and Hospital.

A mob caught the truck driver who was trying to flee the spot immediately after the accident. They beat up the driver who received injuries in the incident. The vehicles were also ransacked by the agitated mob. After being informed, the police reached the spot and freed the accused driver. A scuffle broke out between the police and local residents. A huge contingent of police force rushed to the spot to bring the situation. Police resorted to the lathi charge to disperse the mob. The situation was brought under control three hours after the incident.

Local residents alleged that the trucks often run at top speed as a result of which accidents have almost become a regular phenomenon on National Highway 34. Despite of the repeated pleas, the police failed to take any steps against the vehicles that flout the traffic rule, alleged the local residents. Police have, however, denied the allegation and said it is difficult for the police to carry out surveillance along the entire stretch of the National Highway in Malda. Police have arrested the driver and seized the vehicle after the incident. They have started a probe into the incident.
