Trinamool Congress worker shot at in Burdwan

A Trinamool Congress worker was shot at when he was returning from his work on Monday night, police said. The incident took place at Katherpool area near Kalibazar in Burdwan.

Police said the victim Biplab Bhattacharya is a resident of Kalibazar area. Some unidentified miscreants with their faces covered stopped him when he was returning from his work.

He started shouting for help. Hearing his cry, some villagers who were sitting in a nearby tea stall rushed to the spot.

Finding the people coming, the miscreants started running and while fleeing they opened fire.

Bhattacharya received bullet injuries on his right hand. Some of the villagers had chased the miscreants while rests took the victim to a hospital. The villagers failed to catch the miscreants as they had appeared on a motor bike.

Apprehending that they may get caught, the accused hurled bombs while fleeing and it led to panic in the area. Police rushed to the spot soon after receiving information and initiated a probe in this connection.

Police pickets have been posted in the area to avoid deteriorating law and order situation.

Bhattacharya told the police that he felt that the accused were CPI(M)-backed goons and they had attacked him as he raised voice against them ahead of the Lok Sabha polls.

Police said this was the second time when Bhattacharya had been attacked. He was once beaten up in early 2015.

The Trinamool Congress workers and supporters held a rally in the area on Tuesday protesting against the attack on Bhattacharya.

Police initiated a search operation for the accused. “We spoke to the victim and he gave details of the people whom he doubts. It is expected that we can arrest the accused soon,” said a senior police officer.
