Trinamool Congress district secy shot at in Murshidabad

Subir Sarkar, the Murshidabad district secretary of Trinamool Congress, was shot at in front of his house at Sayedabad in Behrampore in broad daylight on Thursday morning.

He was admitted in Murshidabad Medical College and Hospital with bullet injuries on his chest, hands and right leg. Doctors stated his condition to be critical after examining him. According to local TMC leaders, Congress backed goons are behind the attack and the district secretary of the party was attacked realising that they have started losing ground in their so called “bastion”.

Narrating Thursday’s incident, a police officer said Sarkar was attacked as soon as he came out of his house to take his daughter for tuition. The victim’s mother, who was standing just inside the main gate of the house, told the police that three youth with their faces covered came on a motorbike and fired indiscriminately.

Sarkar pushed his daughter and she fell aside while three bullets hit him. Later, investigation revealed that the miscreants had fired five bullets. Within minutes the trio had left the place before anybody could have chased them. Two bullets hit his chest and hand. One pierced through his right leg.

Hearing cry of the victim’s mother, his wife, who was offering puja in the first floor of the house, rushed out and found Sarkar lying unconscious in a drain. He was bleeding profusely. Local people rushed to the spot and took him to a local healthcare centre from where he was shifted to Murshidabad Medical College and Hospital. He was under treatment in the Emergency ward of the hospital and underwent necessary surgery.

Police later came to know that Sarkar had been receiving threat for the past few days. He was also
being threatened with dire consequences for his effort that ensured a foothold of TMC in different parts of the district. Police spoke to the victim’s mother to get description of the persons and the motorbike on which they came. Senior leaders of the party in Murshidabad alleged that Congress had engaged goons to attack Sarkar as it is quite clear to them that TMC is going to do very well in the district. They also contacted the senior leaders of the party in Kolkata.

The district leaders would also hold rallies protesting against the attack on their leaders and there will be greater movement if the police fail to arrest the miscreants within a few days.
