Travelling across state on Sabuj Sathi cycle, teenager to visit Nabanna to thank CM

After getting the bicycle, 17-year-old Tirtha Roy made up his mind that he would travel to various places in order to acquaint himself with the cultural heritage of West Bengal and will also get to know about the diverse culture of the state.

He wanted to meet Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee at her office in Nabanna, if he ever got an opportunity to express his gratitude to her.

Roy was brought up by his uncle after he had lost his parents when he was a child. He had always wished to have a bicycle, but penury did not let him.

He was overwhelmed with joy when he first came to know that he was also eligible get a bicycle from the school under the Sabuj Sathi scheme, a brain child of the current Chief Minister. Now, the boy wants to meet the Chief Minister who made his dream come true.

Tirtha, a class twelve student from Sonaullah Higher Secondary School at Paharpur block in Jalpaiguri, had a long-cherished dream to travel throughout the state as he always believed that travel is the best part of education; but due to unforeseen circumstances, the boy’s remained unfulfilled.

After getting the cycle, the boy made up his mind that he would undertake his dream journey.

He also got wholehearted support from his family members.

To fulfill his dream, Tirtha began his journey on March 16. On Saturday, he reached Kaliyagunj in North Dinajpur. After travelling all the way from North Bengal on his bicycle, Tirtha now wants to finish his journey at the state’s secretariat in Nabanna few days from now.

Tirtha had taken up the journey as a challenge as he knew that it is not easy to undertake such a long journey on a bicycle. But his undaunted spirit gave him the extra strength to undertake the voyage. On Saturday, he met the Block Development Officer in Kaliyagunj who handed him a certificate.

Tirtha believes that it is not always possible to know everything by reading books. He believes that travel is a great source of joy and education. He is now anxious to know if he would be able to meet the Chief Minister, whose Sabuj Sathi scheme gave him a bicycle that he had desired since childhood.
