Transport Minister to hold video conference with DMs, SPs

The state transport minister will hold a video conference with District Magistrates and Superintendents of Police to take a stock and  discuss on issues including plying of overloaded goods vehicles and toto services at different areas.

Sources said that the state transport minister Suvendu Adhikari will be holding the meeting next week. It is learnt that he would discuss the issues to bring down the menace of overloading of goods vehicles. It would be mentioned that often problems crop up and accidents take place due to over loading of vehicles.

Thus directions would be given to take necessary steps to check the plying of overloaded vehicles and to take stringent action in case of violation of traffic norms. The toto issue will also come up in the video conference.

It may be recalled that a Group of Ministers (GoM) was formed by the Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee during the first administrative review meeting after coming to power for the second term to get a solution on plying of illegal totos.

The Calcutta High Court had formed a high power committee on May 6 to check the menace of the plying of illegal Totos, motorised vans and auto-rickshaws in different parts of the state and the committee was ordered to take necessary steps to check the menace and also to submit a report before the Court in this connection.

On Friday, the state government has submitted before the Court that a technical committee has been formed to look into the matter of developing the technology of totos and Centre’s intervention has been sought to bring the vehicles within the purview of Motor vehicles Act. The committee is also looking into the possibility of bring in totos within insurance scheme in case there is any accident.
