Train derails in Assam, service disrupted

Delhi-bound Poorvattar Sampark Kranti Express derailed in Assam on Tuesday between Mahur and Phiding station in the Lumding-Silchar hill section, disrupting rail service in the area, Northeast Frontier Railway release said.

The Poorvattar Sampark Kranti Express, comprising 21 coaches, had left Silchar for New Delhi at 6.30 pm on Monday. One pair of wheels of its luggage-cum-parcel van derailed at a place about 83 km from Lumding at round 1.50 am. All passengers on board are safe, the release said.

Railways officials immediately started restoration work at the site and the train was taken back to New Haflong station where the passengers were provided drinking water, tea and snacks. Helpline numbers 03674-263526, 263126 and 263120 have been activated at Lumding, 0361 2731621, 2731622 and 2731623 at Guwahati, 03842-245414, 245419 and 245423 at Silchar, 03842-269546, 269547 and 269548 at Badarpur.
