Traffic release: Mehrauli, Mahipal road widening project gets clearance

After getting clearance from Unified Traffic and Transportation Infrastructure planning and Engineering Centre (UTTIPEC), widening work on the  Mehrauli-Mahipalpur Road is set to begin. The Pubic Works Department has been appointed as the executing agency of this mega project. The widening is expected to ease overcrowding, congestion and long traffic jams in Mehrauli.

Presently, the existing road is 30 metres wide, but it is to be widened to 75 metres, thereby allowing traffic movement in eight lanes. The Residents Welfare Association of Vasant Vihar had objected to the widening, claiming it violated their right over the land and could destroy 1,000 trees.

PWD said some modifications have been made in the original plan, and at least 25 per cent of road space will be left for planting trees, because during widening work about 735 trees are expected to be destroyed PWD has decided to plant at least 10,000 trees in lieu of these 735 plants.
The government had appointed a consultant to complete spade work at the earliest to widen the road.
