Traffic cop assaults auto driver in Ggn

An autorickshaw driver was allegedly assaulted by a traffic cop outside HUDA City Centre Metro station on Tuesday and the entire episode was captured in a mobile video. The police have, however, registered a case against the driver for allegedly assaulting a traffic cop. The police stated that the driver initiated the assault by abusing and hitting an on-duty policeman.

The incident happened at around 12 noon when the traffic cop was issuing challans to the drivers who were not following traffic rules near HUDA City Centre. Traffic Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Ravinder, constable Sube Singh and constable Naseeb Singh were issuing challans in the area, when according to the FIR filed in Sector 29 police station, the accused driver started abusing them.

The FIR states that driver Junaid Khan (25) then started assaulting the cops and even tore ASI Ravinder’s uniform. The other two cops then intervened and tried to stop the scuffle. Junaid was taken to the police station where he was booked under Sections 332 (voluntarily causing hurt to deter public servant from his duty), 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty), 506 (criminal intimidation) and 186 (obstructing public servant in discharge of public functions) IPC after ASI’s medical tests verified injuries due to assault.

Other auto drivers told Millennium Post that cops were fining Junaid for not wearing his uniform. Junaid was being fined Rs 100 though he kept on requesting them not to as he had only started his day.

“We will investigate the matter and will see what really happened. If the cops are at fault then necessary action will be taken against them,” said ACP Ramesh Pal.
