Top Naxalite held in UP

Uttar Pradesh police have arrested two dreaded Naxalites, one of them an area commander of eastern region in Chaupan area of Sonebhadra district here on Thursday. Both of them were carrying reward on their heads.

The arrested naxalites have been identified as Munna Vishwakarma and Ajit Kol. UP and Bihar police had announced a reward of Rs 2.5 lakh on the head of Munna, while Rs 50,000 reward was on Ajit.

Police sources here said the arrests were made after a brief encounter at the Kanjhkanaura forest area and seized from them huge quantity of firearms. 'The police had encircled the forest area after a tip-off about presence of Naxalites. On the wee hours of Thursday the police challenged them. The Naxalities opened fire. There was a brief encounter after which both of them surrendered before the police,' a senior official associated with anti-Naxal drive said.

Sources have seized SLR, Carbine, guns and other arms and ammunition. Several crimes of murder and kidnapping were pending against the Naxalites. 'In 2007 Munna Vishwakarma was associated with a Naxal attack in which seven policemen were killed in Sonebhadra region,' the official said.

The Sonebhadra is the hotbed of Naxal activities. The Union Government had launched Intergrated Action Plan under Backward Region Grant Fund but the implementation of these schemes was poor. The Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) of India in its report has revealed that most projects were never completed in time, the quality of work was poor, there was duplication of projects and drain of funds due to skipping of the tender process.
