Top cop gets the force in line

The newly posted Additional Commissioner of Police [north-east], V V Chaudhary, often conducts surprise visits to make sure that the citizens have access to efficient policing. And if he finds any cop absent from the police pickets or from the place where they are posted, he immediately suspends them.

On Friday, when Chaudhary was on round, he saw that the cops were absent at the picket in Durgapuri Chowk and suspended two cops, including a head constable. The cops were identified as Pushpender, the head constable, and Dinesh, constable. Both are in their early 40s.

A few days ago, three constables and a head constable were suspended for not being present during their duty hours. Chaudhary, who came to visit two crime spots in Mansarovar Park in Delhi, decided to go on a surprise inspection and found that the four cops were negligent about the beat duties assigned to them. On Saturday, the three suspended constables re-joined duty.

The constables who were suspended earlier were identified as Suraj Bhan, Hari Om, Ishwar and Vinod, the head constable. All four of them are deployed in Mansarovar Park police station and are over 40 years old. When Chaudhary questioned them about their absence, they informed him that they had gone to get something to eat.

Chaudhary has also instructed the police stations that falls under north-east district to revisit the criminals’ families who were released after being arrested.

He asked the cops to make use of the police records to keep track of the criminals. At the north-east district, records have been maintained since 1980. A total of 16 police stations fall under Chaudhary’s jurisdiction.

The police stations include Bhajan Pura, GTB Enclave, Gokul Puri, Harsh Vihar, Jyoti Nagar, Karawal Nagar, Khajoori Khas, MS Park, Nand Nagri, New Usman Pur, Seelampur, Seema Puri, Sonia Vihar, Shahdara, Welcome and Zafrabad.

Each day the beat constable assigned for this duty has to visit 10 families whose members were involved in crime. The cops are supposed to find information regarding the source of income of the family as well as figure out what the criminal was up to at present.

The cops are supposed to check around the neighbourhood and verify the details before reporting back to the police station.

According to Chaudhary, 'a criminal will always be a criminal and so keeping an eye on them is quite necessary.’

‘Most of the criminals have shifted their houses. Neighbours don’t know anything. A few of them have passed away. It is a tough task to revisit all the criminals as the list is long. But as it is the order of the Additional Commissioner of Police, we are doing our best to trace them all. He is putting his best to make the north-east zone crime free,' a police official said.
